2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY

If you like searching for something about movies, you are in the right place. Today, I want to share about one of the famous movies – 2001: A Space Odyssey. This movie is about traveling to space, and it has a legendary scenario for many reasons.

Firstly, the movie starts with primates, and you watch them for a long time. There are too many gorilla screams, and it is too realistic because this movie’s director is Kubrick, who used real gorilla screams. By using gorilla screams, I think Stanley Kubrick wanted to show us human evolution, because during different phases of the movie, one watches the progress of humanity part by part.

At the beginning, we see gorillas trying to understand what a monolith is. We see the monolith in other parts of the movie. However, in those parts, there are no gorillas around. There are just people. When people look at the monolith, they see themselves. It is like a mirror, so they can watch themselves; however, we shouldn’t forget something. The monolith can watch the people or primates, too.

Secondly, I also want to write about the impact of history on this movie. We know that, after the Second World War, space exploration programs accelerated and this was a kind of race between the USA and the USSR. Stephen King also mentioned this in one of his speeches. He said, “When I was a child, I used to go to the cinema every Saturday and Sunday. I heard from the news that Sputnik 1 was sent to low orbit by the Russians. Next, everyone felt badly about it in the movie theater.” Therefore, the American children lost all hope about going to space. It was the first trauma for them. That’s why Americans directed movies about threats from space from 1960 to 1970. Kubrick wanted to release this movie before the Americans went to the Moon. Therefore, this movie was released a year before Americans went to the Moon.

Lastly, the movie has inspired some more creative work until this time. For example, this movie inspired David Bowie while he was writing “Space Oddity.” Then, Bowie was inspired by Chris Hadfield because he released a cover called “Space Oddity.” Moreover, there is a book adapted from the movie by Arthur Clarke (see the first picture). To sum up, I think this movie is a real odyssey to people. There are a lot of details, and you can watch it again and again for the reasons I mentioned above. I hope you enjoyed my post. See you in my next post.
