Everyone loves music. Music has always been in our lives since ancient times, but now it is at our fingertips.
Did you know that many music genres came from the U.S. and that the U.S. has helped us listen to music with one click? In this post, we will talk about this journey.
From the 1600s to the 1880s, Europeans brought enslaved Africans to America. Under slavery, people needed to express their feelings, and they created genres like Spirituals and Work Songs. They were created by blending African rhythms and instruments with European harmonies.
In 1865, slavery was abolished by law after the Civil War, but society was still racist. This situation caused the birth of Gospel and Blues music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1877, Thomas Edison revolutionized music by inventing the phonograph. During this time, music became a commercial product because of the popularity of records and radio.
In the 1920s, Jazz entered our lives, and the “Jazz Age” began. In the 1920s, alcohol was illegal, which caused hidden bars named “speakeasies” to emerge. Jazz played a major role during this period because it became a symbol of freedom.
Music was changed by new developments in the middle of the 20th century. George Beauchamp and Adolph Rickenbacker developed the first electric guitar. With the invention of the electric guitar and the influence of Country music and Blues, Rock music came into our lives.
From the 20th century to today, studios have become more popular, and musicians can now sing and record. They are able to mix and edit sounds; therefore, many music genres have emerged. Later, Apple was inspired by Sony Walkman and invented iPods, allowing people to listen to music everywhere. Afterward, the internet became more popular, and Napster was one of the first steps of the internet age. Later, Spotify and YouTube were founded, marking the beginning of the internet era for the music industry.
In conclusion, America has revolutionized music through culture and technology. As Louis Armstrong once said: “Music is life itself.” This journey continues to shape our world.
