Coffee Culture in South Korea

Coffee was introduced to Korea in the 19th century, but it took a long time to become popular in society. Nowadays, Korean people drink coffee three times or more a day. Many Koreans enjoy iced Americano, especially because they often work long hours. An iced Americano is a strong coffee that helps them stay awake and work for long hours. Many people choose it because it is refreshing and not too heavy, even when drinking it for a long time. In South Korea, iced Americano is cheaper than other types of coffee because it is consumed a lot. To stay awake, many people also eat coffee candies. These candies became very popular, especially thanks to K-dramas. K-dramas often show characters drinking instant coffee or eating coffee candies, which helped make them famous across the country.

Did you know that coffee advertisements in South Korea often show pictures of famous people, like idols and actors? This is a smart way to increase sales. Fans feel more excited to buy coffee when they see their favorite stars in the advertisements. It helps brands become more popular and sell more products.

Drinking coffee isn’t just a drink; it is a social activity. Coffee shops are often chosen as places to meet with friends, work, go on dates, or read books. In South Korea, cafés have a lot of different concepts, such as cat cafés, book cafés, flower cafés, and vintage cafés. Because of these fun ideas, many people love to visit them. There is a café for everyone’s taste and style, making coffee culture even more special.

South Korea also has some special coffee drinks that are different from regular coffee. Two popular examples are Misugaru Latte and Dalgona Coffee. Misugaru Latte is made with powdered grains such as barley, rice, and oats. This flavor has a slightly nutty and sweet taste. It is commonly used in traditional Korean beverages. Some cafes may add coffee to this latte, but originally it doesn’t contain coffee.

Dalgona Coffee is another trendy coffee. It became very popular on social media during the pandemic. The name “Dalgona” comes from a traditional Korean candy known for its sweet taste and smooth, airy texture. Dalgona coffee is made by whipping instant coffee, sugar, and hot water until it becomes a creamy foam. This foam is then placed on top of cold or hot milk, creating a drink that looks and tastes similar to the candy.

I hope you will give these cafés and coffees a try. Enjoy!
