Traditional Sports That Will Surprise You!

Human beings have always been competitive, but sometimes in strange ways. Throughout history, people have created unique games and contests to show their strength, courage or just to have fun together. In this blog post, we will discover some sports that originated in different parts of the world and have remained popular to this day.

Yabusame (Japan)

Yabusame is a traditional archery sport originated in medieval Japan. It was originally played by samurai warriors to improve their fighting skills. In this sport, horseback riders try to hit wooden targets that are placed along a track. They shoot arrows while riding their horses at full speed. Today, Yabusame is kept alive through festivals and cultural events in Japan.

Buzkashi (Afghanistan)

Another horseback sport, Buzkashi, has its origins in Central Asia, and it is especially popular in Afghanistan. It is believed to have begun among nomadic tribes centuries ago. In this sport, riders’ main goal is to take control of the goat carcass. Yes, a goat carcass! Although it may sound strange, it is a key feature of Buzkashi and an important part of its cultural heritage.

Dragon Boat Racing (China)

Dragon Boat Racing is a traditional Chinese water sport. It is thought to have started more than 2,000 years ago as a tradition. There was a Chinese poet named Qu Yuan, and people wanted to honor him. Over time, this cultural tradition turned into a competitive sport. In this sport, teams of paddlers race boats decorated like dragons. Today, dragon boat racing is played in many countries around the world.

Cheese Rolling (England)

Cheese rolling is perhaps one of the strangest and funniest sports in the world. Players run down a steep hill to chase a wheel of cheese. The one who reaches the bottom of the hill first wins and gets the cheese! This sport originated in England and has been around for over 200 years. It is believed to have started as a tradition where people celebrated the arrival of spring in rural England.
