Long before electricity or even books, civilization itself required people to be involved in activities simply to pass the time. Carving into ancient stones, playing with sticks, stones, and bones in simple physical games, board games like Senet and Go, dice and cards, chess, sports like football, cricket, and baseball, and many more could not have been meant just for fun. They surely had spiritual, educational, and social roles in many cultures and civilizations. In this modern era, however, to feed human creativity, competition, and the need for fun alongside spiritual, educational, and social needs, the activity of gaming on a modern screen has emerged.
Starting in the early 1950s, mechanical and electric games such as Pinball, Monopoly, and Scrabble gave way to video games on a screen.
- 1952: OXO (early digital tic-tac-toe).
- 1958: Tennis for Two (first interactive video game).
- 1972: Pong (Atari) launches the arcade era.
- 1977: Atari 2600 brings gaming into homes.
Considering the status quo of the era they emerged in, it is not difficult to reason that they had an outstanding effect on people. Especially the Atari 2600, by bringing gaming into homes rather than arcade salons, contributed greatly to this evolution.
When it comes to the 1980s, with the Digital Revolution, arcades such as Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Space Invaders; home consoles such as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), PlayStation, and Xbox; and PC & online gaming such as Doom, World of Warcraft, and Fortnite came into the picture, only to be dominated by the mobile gaming industry that even virtual reality, augmented reality, and AI-generated games cannot beat. Taking gaming to new heights today, whether you are a casual player or an eSports competitor, gaming has become a global phenomenon and a major part of modern culture for purposes varying from passing the time to earning a living by combining art, storytelling, and competition.
Considering the history of video games, it is not difficult to understand why people should play them. First of all, video games have proven to improve cognitive abilities, as they require strategic thinking, planning, decision-making, hand-eye coordination, short-term memory, multitasking abilities, and imaginative thinking. Additionally, they foster collaboration and communication via social interaction. Many gamers have online game friends that have become real-life friendships and even marriages. Furthermore, playing video games enhances familiarity with technology and digital interfaces. This leads gamers to follow new technologies such as GeForce Now, Xcloud, Stadia, and many more. Interestingly, gamers may prove to have better language abilities thanks to picking up English or other languages through in-game dialogue and interactions. Lastly, video games have educational value as well. Video games such as Kerbal Space Program, Civilization, or Portal combine fun with lessons in physics, history, and logic. In a way, they are designed to teach specific content such as medical procedures, business skills, or environmental awareness. Of course, playing video games may not award you a certificate or entitle you to perform medical procedures. Yet, they may help you survive if you get stuck on an island or in a zombie apocalypse. Above all, video games let you escape the real world and allow you to step into new worlds, live out different lives, and experience adventures you might never encounter otherwise. Thus, playing games can reduce anxiety or stress, provide a dopamine boost and a sense of accomplishment, and allow you to explore different identities, roles, or emotions.
Yet, as it is in everything in life, excessive exposure to video games, overplaying, in other words, can lead to issues such as decreased physical activity or disrupted sleep if not managed responsibly. The most important aspect to know regarding video games is that moderation is crucial. Yet, worry not, dear reader, for moderation is not that difficult, and when enjoyed in balance, video games can offer not only entertainment but also opportunities for learning, creativity, and social connection, along with the chance to earn loads of money 🙂
